The Microtonal Guitar
Prof. Jürgen Ruck and Dr. Hansjörg Ewert
In this intercultural project with participants from Basel, Istanbul, Aarhus, Helsinki and Wuerzburg, the potential of the guitar with movable frets was explored and tried out practically in different directions: For example by performing old music in historic tunings, Turkish maqams with their typical microtonal scales and (last but not least) new music especially commissioned for/with the “Microtonal Guitar”.
The guitar with movable frets, as developed first by the German guitar builder Vogt as a tool to improve the tempered tuning on guitar and later further developed by Prof. Tolgahan Çoğulu (Istanbul Technical University), allows to realize non-tempered tunings in a very flexible way. It will be possible to observe and try such instruments during the workshop.
The workshop subjects start from the physical fundaments of microtonality, the history of microtonal guitars up to examples of its use in old music and new music.
